(When we heard this diet will make you lose weight, and that also 10-17 pounds – my husband and I were curious. GM diet, yes…it is ‘General Motors’ diet. We were wondering what in the world this giant in car making has to do with diet. Let me tell you that story. I am not going into the details of its origin, name, effectiveness…and all. You can get all that information from the web. I am not affiliated with anything or this should not be considered as any recommendation. I am telling our personal story of GM diet experience. )
“Hey Dais…did you hear about GM diet”. My husband looked at me with a smile. Recently I was teasing him saying he is getting ‘froggy chin’ because of fat.
“Ha ha…GM diet? Something with the car or what? “ I couldn’t stop myself from laughing hearing about it.
“Oh, rumor is it was created for GM employees. Anyway, they say it can reduce 10-17 pounds in a week”. He explained. The effectiveness of this seven day plan is that the food eaten burns more calories than they give to the body in caloric value. It is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being.
“Maybe you should try it”. Anyway, I didn’t want to try any diet at all.
He shopped for the diet…bought lot of fruits, vegetables and some meat.
Diet: All fruits except bananas.
Why it works: Here you are preparing your body for the upcoming diet. Your only source of nutrition is fruits which are nature’s perfect food.
He bought cantaloupes and watermelon because they highly recommended consuming lots of melons the first day. He thought it was going to be so easy to eat just those.
‘I have no idea why people do these diets at all.” He looked so miserable eating just fruits.
“If you don’t want, don’t do it’. I replied with a smile.
He looked what we were eating. Then he complained again.
“If you took a decision, stick with it. Or else, don’t do it…just leave it.” I was little irritated.
At night, he wanted vegetable soup. We didn’t make the ‘GM wonder soup’ like what they said, but with vegetables and the spices we liked. He put extra salt, spices…to have flavor.
The good thing about the diet I liked was, you could eat as much as you want in each day. And you can take vegetable soup any time you want, on any day. During the first seven days you must abstain from all alcohol. You must drink 10 glasses of water each day.
*Weight: Lost 6.1 lb from original weight.
“Wow..is it true, you lost that much?!” I was surprised.
“Yes, I did.” He smiled triumphantly.
Diet: All vegetables. He can eat as much he wants, raw or cooked. There is no limit on the amount or type.
Why it works: Day starts with a fix of complex carbohydrates coupled with an oil dose. This is taken in the morning for energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fiber.
“How can you eat this potato”? I thought it was crazy to eat baked potatoes in the morning. They suggested he started his day two with a large baked potato for breakfast.
At lunch he ate steamed cabbage and carrots with herbs.
Night he wanted to eat something nice. He bought Spaghetti squash the other day. I have no idea what is the difference at all with the regular squash. He baked it. When he scratched it out, it looked just like spaghetti! I sautéed zucchini, garlic, onion, mushroom, and added spaghetti sauce with some herbs. We topped it over the spaghetti squash….umm…tasted good!
“Do you want to weigh” I asked with a hiding smile. He is stuffed since it was a good meal.
Alas! He gained 6lb again.
“This is crazy”. We didn’t understand this diet at all.
Weight: Lost 4.8 lb from original weight. (So that weight gain might have been his meal and fluids at night.)
Diet: A mixture of fruits and vegetables of his choice are the diet on this day. He can take any amount at any quantity. But no bananas and potatoes are allowed.
Why it works: Your system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds.
Actually this made us to be creative to find new dishes, or made us think what we can do with the vegetables. The bland tasting vegetables and leaves made salad. Some vegetables were steamed.
One of our simple and easy recipes for salad:
Mix sliced cucumber with sweet peas. Garnish with coriander leaves (cilantro) and salt.
Weight: Lost 6.8 lb from original weight.
Diet: Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk.
Why it works: They are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the past three days.
Being on a diet is not that easy. One thing I like about it is, it makes you little more disciplined, and aware of self.
He ate some soup also. But he was able to stick to bananas and milk. I felt pity for him. J
Weight: Lost 7.7 lb from original weight.
Diet: Today is feast day. He can eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef- almost 1.5 lb. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. Increase water intake by one quart.
Why it works: The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fiber. Lots and lots of water purify your system.
He fried the beef first- it cooks with the fat in it. Then added onion, garlic and ginger- fried again. Cut 3 tomatoes and sautéed a little in a separate pan. Topped these tomatoes over the beef and sprinkled some herbs. It was very good.
Weight: Lost 8.9 lb from original weight.
Diet: Beef and vegetables. He can eat as much as beef he wants.
Why it works: Iron and proteins from beef, Vitamins and fiber from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination.
Instead of tomatoes, he used some sauteed vegetables over the beef mixture.
Weight: Lost 9.8 lb from original weight.
Diet: Today food should be brown rice, fruit juices and vegetables.
Why it works: Finished off with healthier dish. You have your system under control and it should thank you for the flushing and cleaning you just gave it.
He enjoyed his food well. It was satisfying.
Weight: Lost 10.7 lb from original weight.
“Look at me” He said with a smile.
“Wow! It is amazing”. I agreed that he looks great.
Everyone likes different things in their own way. Food is different in different countries. So adopt it in your way. Replace with stuff you like.
It worked well for losing weight fast. If you can keep on the balanced meal, the weight can stay same. But if you went on a craving, you may gain it back. If it is suitable, you can try once in every month. Works well.
